The John Rylands Library, housed in a superb Neo-Gothic building, owes it’s international renown to it’s fine collection of rare books, many of which were purchased by Mrs Rylands. A copy of the Gutenberg Bible of 1455 and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales printed by William Caxton early in the 16th Century are among the fine treasure of books and manuscripts housed in this Library. Portrait busts of famous writers and sculptures symbolising Science and the Arts are also displayed. When John Rylands died he left a great personal fortune, which his widow used to build the Library, the 3rd largest academic library in Britain.
